Ryan’s extensive experience offers clients the comfort necessary to feel at ease with the discovery process, which often is the most stressful portion of litigation. He goes beyond the basic vendor models of data collection, review, and management by tailoring solutions to the particular needs of his clients’ matters. Ryan, along with the Electronic Discovery and Information Management team, is able to create effective and individualized solutions that capitalize on our aligned goals utilizing the most up-to-date technologies, methods, and review platforms to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in discovery. He has significant experience advising clients on all aspects of e-discovery and regularly supervises large teams of attorneys on document reviews and other complex discovery tasks.

Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Ryan worked at an AmLaw 100 firm as a senior staff attorney. He focused his practice on e-discovery, primarily for large-scale litigation in the pharmaceutical industry. Additionally, he worked on matters related to white collar defense, contract disputes, and government investigations.

Since joining Crowell, Ryan has actively participated in pro bono matters, including representing clients in criminal proceedings in Montgomery County [Maryland] Circuit Court.

Going Back to the Basics - Custodial Interviews & Supervised Collections: Building a Defensible Foundation for eDiscovery

Despite advances in eDiscovery technology, custodial interviews and supervised collections remain essential to a defensible and efficient discovery process. This panel will explore why over-reliance on self-collections and search-term-only strategies can lead to incomplete data, increased costs, and court sanctions. Our experts will walk through best practices for conducting effective custodial interviews, identifying and preserving key data sources, and leveraging collaborative workflows that reduce risk and enhance review accuracy. Attendees will gain practical insights on integrating interviews with real-time collections, using tools like screen sharing, documenting workflows for defensibility, and addressing common client objections. Whether you're in-house, outside counsel, or a service provider, this session will help you elevate your approach to ESI identification, preservation, and collection.
