In this session, we will be hosting a panel discussion on practical issues around GDPR one year (and a bit) on, what organisations need to be doing to avoid missteps, and the likely consequences if they get it wrong.

On May 25, 2019, we will celebrate the first birthday of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We are proud to invite you to our seminar with special guest speaker Mr. David Stevens, the newly appointed Chairman of the Belgian Data Protection Authority, who will shed light on the implementation of the GDPR from the point of view of the Authority.

The European Union’s General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR) has had a vast impact in how companies operate in today’s data-driven global economy. The GDPR will apply in all EU Member States as from May 25, 2018 and companies in the EU and abroad have shifted into a higher gear to be fully prepared for compliance. But compliance is no easy matter, and there are many hurdles to jump.

The European Regulation on “the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data” (also known as the "GDPR") will be applicable in all EU Member States from May 25, 2018.

After four years of negotiations, the official text of the new European Regulation on the processing of personal data (also known as the "GDPR" or "General Data Protection Regulation") was published on May 4, 2016. This Regulation came into force on May 24, 2016 and its provisions will be applicable from May 25, 2018, after a two years' transitional period. During previous seminars, we already discussed the GDPR in general. At our next seminar on October 20, we will discuss a number of specific topics more in detail.

In its plenary session of April 14, 2016, the European Parliament approved the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), after the Council already adopted the final text on April 8, 2016.
