Over the past few years, we’ve seen a wave of worldwide attention on the governance of AI, at all levels, driven by technological advancements in generative AI and evolving legal questions regarding the extent to which existing laws and regulations apply to AI. Changing administrations have added to the complex task of assessing and predicting the regulatory landscape. Just since our July 2024 update:

  • The European Commission published guidelines on the definition of “artificial intelligence system” and on prohibited AI practices under the AI Act.
  • President Trump revoked President Biden's October 2023 Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Numerous US states have introduced and passed legislation regarding AI, with a focus on health insurance, environment, and system development.
  • The U.S. Senate unanimously passed the TAKE IT DOWN Act, which addresses the issue of nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII).
  • Global powers like Canada, China, France, and India have issued new AI frameworks and guidelines.
