San Francisco – May 4, 2020: The National Law Journal named Crowell & Moring partner J. Daniel Sharp to its 2020 list of Plaintiffs’ Lawyers Trailblazers. The list features 25 lawyers who “have made significant marks on the practice, policy and technological advancements in their sector.”

Sharp was recognized in large part for his work representing the University of California in a landmark case regarding the raid of an Alzheimer’s disease research program at UC San Diego by the University of Southern California. The case, The Regents of the University of California v. Paul S. Aisen, et al., was settled with a $50 million payment and a public apology from USC and one of its faculty members. The Los Angeles Times reported on the settlement as a “jaw-dropping conclusion” to “unprecedented litigation” concerning the protection of academic research.

In his practice, Sharp represents investors, universities, corporate entities, and more in a range of litigation cases both in trial and appellate courts. Editors at The National Law Journal noted in a profile of Sharp that, “for more than 30 years, he has pursued his advocacy for justice and protecting the reputations of his clients.”

“I am honored to be recognized as a trailblazer in plaintiffs’ law,” said Sharp, “One of the most rewarding aspects of the practice of law is standing up for clients against people who are abusing their privileges. This happens all too frequently, whether in academia or the corporate world.”
