Partner Evan Wolff Participates in First Annual Cyber Day on Capitol Hill

Firm News | 2 min read | 09.23.19

Washington – September 23, 2019: Evan D. Wolff, co-chair of Crowell & Moring’s Privacy & Cybersecurity Group, recently participated in the first annual Cyber Day on the Hill at the U.S. Capitol. The event was held by the Democratic Digital Communications Staff Association in partnership with the Congressional Tech Staff Association, and featured “Tech Talks” from leaders in information security and technology policy who trained staff on cutting-edge tactics to prevent cyber intrusions, social engineering hacks, and common data hygiene mistakes.

Wolff spoke on a panel titled “The Anatomy of a Data Breach,” which broke down the anatomy of how a cyberattack happens, and simple steps that congressional staffers can take to protect their offices.

In addition, Wolff was recently appointed as senior adviser to the U.S. Cyberspace Solarium Commission,
a bicameral, bipartisan, intergovernmental body created by the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act to develop a strategic approach to defending the United States in cyberspace against cyberattacks of significant consequence. Over the coming months the CSC will direct research, consult experts, and coordinate public and private stakeholders. Wolff recently spoke at the RSA Charge 2019 conference on managing digital risk.

Wolff was tapped to co-chair Columbia University’s School of International Public Affairs’ New York Cyber Task Force. The initial task force convened experts from finance and cybersecurity, former government officials, and leading academics to produce a report entitled, “Building a Defensible Cyberspace.” The newly-appointed task force plans to build upon that work and address how the federal government and private sector can increase collaboration to protect the nation.

Prior to entering private practice, Wolff served as an advisor to the senior leadership at the Department of Homeland Security. Drawing upon his experience as a scientist, program manager, and lawyer, Wolff develops blended legal, technical, and governance mechanisms to prepare companies with rapid and comprehensive responses to rapidly evolving cybersecurity risks and threats. He is an adjunct professor at Columbia University and a global fellow with the Wilson Center.
