The National Legal Aid & Defender Association recognized Crowell & Moring with its 2024 Beacon of Justice Award, one of 40 firms singled out for efforts to address issues related to civil and human rights.

The award was presented at the NLADA Exemplar Awards Gala on June 6 in Washington, D.C.

The 2024 Beacon of Justice honorees have demonstrated “an understanding of the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, gender, religion, sexual orientation and other characteristics that may create interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage,” according to NLADA.

Over the last year, Crowell has had several pro bono initiatives focused on civil and human rights, including partnering with the ACLU of Maryland to pave the way for the town of Federalsburg, Md., to elect the first two Black members of the town council in the town’s 200-year history. The firm also joined the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law as an anchor firm of its Protecting and Advancing DEI Pro Bono Initiative in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action in higher education. In addition, Crowell filed an amicus brief in U.S. v. Rahimi, asking the Supreme Court to reverse a lower court ruling that struck down three decades of federal law banning abusers subject to a domestic violence protective order from owning a gun.

“Recognizing the outstanding efforts of these law firms is a true joy for us. Collectively, they have been champions for civil and human rights on a global scale. When businesses speak up, the world pays attention. And when they act, the world follows suit,” said April Frazier Camarapresident and CEO of NLADA, announcing the award winners.
