Washington – June 20, 2024: The D.C. Bar named Crowell & Moring partner John McCarthy the 2024 Laura N. Rinaldi Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year. The award is presented to a lawyer for “their excellence, achievement, and commitment to providing legal services to the District’s low-income and/or disadvantaged individuals and/or organizations serving such individuals.”
McCarthy has made representing low-income individuals an integral part of his legal career. Over the past 15 years, he has dedicated more than 100 pro bono hours each year to representing low income clients on child custody, eviction defense, asylum, domestic violence, and veterans’ benefits matters. His pro bono efforts are focused on impacting one individual at a time, helping them with compassion, enthusiasm, and caring at a difficult time in their lives.
McCarthy has made significant contributions to Crowell’s pro bono program and to the larger D.C. community through his willingness to handle the most difficult clients and cases, his mentoring and encouragement of associates and counsel, the hands-on supervision and trial opportunities that he provides to young attorneys through custody and eviction defense cases, his leadership on the firm’s Public Service Committee, and his service on legal services provider boards, such as Catholic Charities Legal Network and the Legal Aid Society.
McCarthy, a member of the firm’s Government Contracts Group, has spent more than 30 years litigating all forms of government contracts cases for both large and small government contractors, with a focus on bid protests. He has particular experience in technology related issues, including litigation regarding complex technology and data rights, patent and other intellectual property issues.
The award will be presented at the D.C. Bar’s 2024 Celebration of Leadership Annual Meeting and Awards Presentation on June 20.

Crowell & Moring Represents Nuclear Energy Startup Atomic Alchemy in its Acquisition by Oklo
March 11, 2025: Oklo Inc. (NYSE: OKLO), an advanced nuclear technology company, announced on March 5, 2025 that it has closed the $25 million acquisition of Crowell client Atomic Alchemy Inc. (“Atomic Alchemy”), a leading innovator in radioisotope production. Oklo intends to use this strategic acquisition to establish a more reliable domestic supply chain for high-value radioisotopes critical to healthcare, research, and defense sectors and provides synergies to Oklo’s fuel recycling and nuclear energy businesses. Demand for radioisotopes is expected to increase significantly over the next decade, while global supply struggles to keep pace due to aging reactor infrastructure and a fragmented global supply chain, which at present is dominated by countries outside the United States. Atomic Alchemy intends to be a low-cost U.S. radioisotope producer that can provide a secure and domestic supply of radioisotopes to U.S. companies commercializing innovative radioisotope applications. With its proprietary VIPR® technology, Atomic Alchemy is building the first scalable production facility to provide a reliable, sustainable source of high-value radioisotopes. Using a vertically integrated model and fuel recycling, in partnership with Oklo, Atomic Alchemy is transforming isotope production to address global shortages, support critical applications, and strengthen national security. The core deal team included Samuel Holland Edwards, Jon O’Connell, Justin Lurie, and Ryan Flynn.
