Crowell & Moring Partner Daniel Cannistra Named a Law360 International Trade “MVP of the Year”

Firm News | 2 min read | 12.19.16

Washington, D.C. – December 19, 2016: Crowell & Moring LLP is proud to announce that Washington, D.C.-based partner Daniel Cannistra has been named a Law360 2016 “MVPs of the Year” for the International Trade category. The series profiles 177 lawyers in nearly 40 practice areas who have distinguished themselves from their peers by securing hard-earned successes in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters, and record-breaking deals.

Law360 noted Cannistra’s role in handling the first-ever countervailing duty case against a Russian company, client JSC Severstal, in an investigation focused on cold-rolled steel imports. When the case eventually came before the U.S. International Trade Commission, Cannistra successfully demonstrated that Russian imports were not hampering domestic producers, and Russia was thus removed from the investigation.

The publication also recognized several other anti-dumping and countervailing duty order cases that Cannistra handled over the past year, including scoring important wins for Meridian Products LLC and Newell Rubbermaid. In those cases, the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled that oven door handles and aluminum mop parts imported by the companies should not be subject to countervailing duties.

“Never underestimate the value of challenging convention,” Cannistra told Law360 of the Meridian and Rubbermaid cases. “When we saw these two cases, we just took a different approach and said that, yes, the government gets a lot of discretion, but it still has to be reasonable.” Cannistra’s team went to the Court of International Trade and asked it to “take a real close look and determine whether the agencies are acting reasonably.” That close look resulted in reversals of critical importance to the clients and the importing community.

Law360 editors reviewed more than 1,000 submissions to determine the winners for the MVP series, which this year includes 177 lawyers from 76 firms spanning 38 practice areas. More information, along with the full list of 2016 MVPs, can be viewed here. No aspect of this advertisement has been approved by the Bars of, or any courts in, the jurisdictions in which the lawyers are admitted to practice.
