Washington – November 2, 2023: Crowell & Moring was saddened to learn of the passing of Ridgway M. ‘Ridge’ Hall, Jr., a founding member of the firm.
“Ridge was a force of nature within our environmental practice, which he started, from the time the firm was founded in 1979, until his retirement in 2011,” said Kirsten L. Nathanson, co-chair of the firm’s Environment & Natural Resources Group and member of the firm’s Management Board. “In addition to being a skilled lawyer, Ridge was a dedicated mentor to associates and counsel, as well as a champion and ally for diversity. His kindness, generosity of time and spirit, and relentless positivity will always be remembered.”
Prior to his tenure at Crowell, Hall began his career as an associate and then partner with Cummings & Lockwood in Stamford, Connecticut and later served as Associate General Counsel for Water at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He was an officer of the Environmental Law Institute, a member of the American Law Institute, and The American College of Environmental Lawyers and repeatedly named one of the top lawyers in the field.
After retiring in 2011, Hall served as vice chair of the Chesapeake Legal Alliance (CLA) and maintained a private part-time practice. Through CLA, he helped create a network of lawyers to handle cases on a pro bono basis relating to the protection and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay, its watershed and its natural resources.
A native of Waterbury, Conn., Hall graduated from Yale College, magna cum laude (1963) and Harvard Law School (1966).
