Washington, D.C. – August 13, 2024: Crowell & Moring has reaffirmed its commitment to Mansfield Certification for 2024-2025, which measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered women, lawyers of color, and LGBTQ+ lawyers.
Since joining Mansfield in 2018, the firm has made strides to increase the transparency and accessibility of its advancement processes, and to open the door wider to ensure that all talent at the firm has a fair, and equal opportunity to be considered for leadership roles and activities. Crowell achieved Mansfield Certification Plus status for 2023 for the second consecutive year, along with Mansfield Certification for the fifth consecutive year. Achieving the Certification Plus recognition signifies that the firm has “not only considered, but achieved 30 percent representation of underrepresented lawyers in many of the Mansfield Rule’s categories.”
“Crowell & Moring is devoted to advancing diversity and inclusiveness. A fundamental aspect of this is making sure that women and diverse lawyers have real and meaningful opportunities for leadership and career progression,” said Agustin Orozco, Crowell’s newly appointed partner champion for the Mansfield certification process. “That's why we are proud to adhere to the principles of the Mansfield Rule and do whatever is necessary to expand our DEI efforts.”
The Mansfield Rule is named after Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to the practice of law in the United States, and it is inspired by the “Rooney Rule,” a mandate that requires every NFL team to interview at least one minority candidate for head coach vacancies.
As a supplement to Mansfield, the firm established the Crowell Rule in 2021, which goes beyond Mansfield’s consideration goals to ensure the firm is considering the best talent in its recruiting initiative. In particular, the firm considers a diverse slate of candidates for every lateral associate, counsel, and partner candidate position, requiring an interview pool of 30% racial/ethnic and LGBTQ+ diversity and at least a 50% interview pool composed of women and lawyers from diverse backgrounds. To ensure accountability, these data are reported directly to Crowell’s Executive Committee Chairperson Chahira Solh, on a quarterly basis.
