Crowell will be hosting Women in Licensing with guest panelist Sally Ourieff to discuss The Art of the Difficult Conversation.
We all have to have difficult conversations, yet they are often so easy to avoid. Phrases like “It isn’t that important,” “It will blow over,” or “If I bring this up, it will only make things worse” may sound familiar. However, research shows that avoiding these discussions can lead to unresolved issues. Did you know that one study of over 500 executives revealed that less than 4% of difficult issues resolve if left unaddressed?
So what can you do to prepare for and manage difficult conversations? How do you create a space for others to broach sensitive topics? How can you disarm hostile behavior or turn destructive conflict into productive disagreement? How can you give hard feedback in a way that can be heard?
This interactive session will share fundamental aspects of communication dynamics, how we get derailed, and what can help us guide difficult conversations successfully. Come prepared with some examples you feel comfortable sharing including conversations you avoided, went well, or could have gone better. We will work together to strengthen your awareness of the issues at play and build out a repertoire of helpful tactics

"The Tide is High: New Guidance on Sea-Level Rise," The Bar Association of San Francisco
Jon Welner will be interviewing Larry Goldzband, the Executive Director of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), on the Commission’s new plan to prepare the SF Bay Area for sea-level rise. BCDC is the agency responsible for permitting all development on the shoreline of San Francisco Bay. On December 5, 2024, the BCDC adopted the Regional Shoreline Adaptation Plan (RSAP). The RSAP is a region-wide plan for the San Francisco Bay shoreline that guides the creation of coordinated, locally planned sea level rise adaptation actions that work together to achieve a regional One Bay Vision. This includes BCDC’s guidelines for how local governments must meet the requirements of SB 272, a new State mandate that requires all local governments along the shoreline to prepare a Subregional Shoreline Adaptation Plan by 2034.
