Washington – September 25, 2017: Crowell & Moring is pleased to announce that Alexis Gilman, a former Assistant Director at the Federal Trade Commission, will join the firm's Washington office as a partner in its global Antitrust Group. With seven years of government experience reviewing high-profile mergers across a range of industries, he will advise clients on antitrust matters, including merger enforcement, government investigations, and litigation. Overall, Gilman possesses 15 years of government and private practice antitrust experience.
"Alexis' government leadership and insight into the Federal Trade Commission's merger review process will be a great asset to our clients," said Angela B. Styles, chair of Crowell & Moring. "We are excited to welcome Alexis aboard. His experience will further strengthen the firm's already deep Antitrust Group bench."
Gilman served all of his seven years at the FTC in the Bureau of Competition, which enforces the nation's antitrust laws. As Assistant Director (2014-2017), he oversaw a 33-lawyer division responsible for the investigation and litigation of potentially anticompetitive transactions across a broad range of industries, including the health care, food and beverage, distribution, consumer goods, and retail sectors. He worked on numerous high-profile merger investigations and litigations, including Sysco/US Foods, DraftKings/FanDuel, Advocate/NorthShore, Staples/Office Depot, Dollar Tree/Family Dollar, and Albertsons/Safeway. As Assistant Director, he advised Bureau of Competition leadership and FTC Commissioners on merger investigations and litigation. Gilman previously served as a Deputy Assistant Director and as a Staff Attorney in the Mergers IV Division at the Commission. Before his government service, he spent nearly eight years in the antitrust practice group at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, where he represented pharmaceutical, chemical, and private equity clients, among others.
Gilman's practice will focus on the health care industry, particularly hospitals, as well as the retail and food and beverage sectors.
"Alexis brings a wealth of experience handling significant antitrust investigations and litigations, in particular in the health care industry, which is highly complementary to our already strong health care capabilities," said Shari Ross Lahlou, co-chair of the firm's Antitrust Group. "Given the increasing consolidation in the health care industry, his experience with mergers and acquisitions involving hospitals and other health care providers will be of great value to clients navigating this realm."
Gilman's arrival marks the second significant hire for the Antitrust Group in recent months. In August, Juan A. Arteaga, the former Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Enforcement at DOJ's Antitrust Division, joined the firm in New York as a partner in the Antitrust Group.
"I'm excited to be joining Crowell & Moring and its Antitrust Group," Gilman said. "The firm is well known for its sophisticated antitrust work on high-profile matters, and for being one of the few firms with recent antitrust merger litigation experience. Crowell & Moring's broad and deep health care platform was also a great fit with my health care provider-merger antitrust experience. But perhaps most importantly, the firm has tremendously talented lawyers working in an exceptionally collegial and collaborative environment."
Gilman received his J.D., with honors, from The George Washington University Law School and his B.A. from Williams College. He is a recipient of the FTC's Janet D. Steiger Team Award on three occasions.
