Firm’s public service partner will assume office next month, will serve as the Bar’s 48th president in 2019
Washington – May 30, 2018: Crowell & Moring LLP is pleased to announce that Susan M. "Susie" Hoffman, the firm's public service partner, has been voted president-elect of the D.C. Bar for the 2018-2019 term. Hoffman will assume office on June 12 and serve in that post for one year before becoming the Bar's 48th president in 2019. Created in 1972, the D.C. Bar is the second-largest unified bar in the United States, with approximately 100,000 members in all 50 states and more than 80 countries.
A recognized leader in the D.C. legal community and pro bono advocate, Hoffman has served as Crowell & Moring's full-time pro bono partner for the past 30 years. She focuses her practice on public service, coordinating, supervising, and administering pro bono work handled by lawyers at the firm, as well as litigating family law, domestic violence, landlord/tenant, and other poverty law cases.
Hoffman has held numerous leadership positions with the D.C. Bar, legal services organizations, and other community nonprofits. She is a former two-term member of the D.C. Bar's Board of Governors. She serves on the board of directors for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless and Washington Council of Lawyers and is a founding board chair of the Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Advocacy Project. In addition, she has served in leadership roles with the American Bar Association Litigation Section, D.C. Bar Foundation, and Legal Counsel for the Elderly, among others.
"Susie has been a champion of the firm's pro bono and community service efforts, and a trailblazer in the D.C. Bar and national public service law community," said Philip T. Inglima, chair of Crowell & Moring. "We could not be prouder of Susie's tremendous accomplishments, and know that all of the D.C. Bar members and communities they serve will benefit in countless ways from her leadership."
"I am honored and grateful to have been elected by the D.C. Bar membership to the president-elect position," Hoffman said. "As I have gotten to know the other candidates for Bar office throughout the campaign, I have been impressed by their dedication, talent, and inspiration — and know that the D.C. Bar will be well-served by them, and that they will further the Bar's reputation as the finest in the country."
Hoffman will become the second Crowell & Moring partner to be D.C. Bar president. Former partner Andrew H. Marks served in that capacity in 1998-1999. After Hoffman serves as president for one year, she will continue in office for a third year as immediate past president of the D.C. Bar.
Additionally, Crowell & Moring partner Daniel W. Wolff, who is chair of the firm's Administrative Law & Regulatory Practice, has been elected to lead the D.C. Bar's Administrative Law and Agency Practice Community.
