Chun Continues Crowell’s Record of Alumni Joining the Judicial Branch

San Francisco – July 12, 2021: California Governor Gavin Newsom has tapped A. Marisa Chun to serve as a California Superior Court judge, San Francisco County, adding her to a roster of Crowell & Morning partners who have been appointed to the bench at the state and federal levels.

At Crowell, Chun represents clients in high-stakes complex civil litigation, including class actions and trade secret misappropriation cases, as well as appeals and white-collar defense matters and investigations. Prior to joining Crowell, Chun’s legal career included both private practice and public service at the U.S. Department of Justice in various positions, including most recently as Deputy Associate Attorney General from 2009 to 2013. Chun also concurrently served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia from 2011 to 2013, and in the District of Maryland during 2012. Chun began her career in the Attorney General’s Honors Program at the Justice Department as a Trial Attorney and Senior Trial Attorney in the Civil Rights Division.

“From her extensive public service at the Justice Department to her current work as a first-chair trial lawyer and respected appellate advocate, Marisa exhibits the highest levels of integrity, excellence, and judgment,” said Philip T. Inglima, chair of Crowell & Moring. “We are extremely proud of Marisa and know that she will make an outstanding judge.”

“I am excited and deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of California,” Chun said. “I am also grateful to my partners and colleagues at Crowell & Moring for their support and friendship. Crowell is such a special place with its deep commitment to its clients and pro bono service, its exceptional lawyering, and its strong collaborative culture.”

Chun has been recognized by the Daily Journal as a "Top Woman Lawyer" in California, by The Recorder as a "Woman Leader in Tech Law," and by The Legal 500, Benchmark Litigation, and Super Lawyers as a leading commercial and white-collar lawyer.

A graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School, Chun clerked for the Honorable Robert Boochever of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She fills the vacancy created on the California Superior Court by the resignation of Judge Edward A. Torpoco.

Chun is the latest Crowell & Moring attorney to be appointed to the federal or state bench and the second partner to join the California Superior Court.
